Bob Pollard - Fiction Man Bob Pollard - Fiction Man (Fading Captain) [mp3]

For me, Bob Pollard's Fading Captain series has been living up to its title. Then the man releases Fiction Man, a project where the Guided By Voices frontman writes the songs, provides the vocals, and hands off the instruments and production to Todd Tobias. Tobias's organic production combined with some of the poppiest tunes Pollard has written in a long time produce a record that bears repeated listening, and bodes well for Robert Pollard's post-GBV solo career. - dave

Guided By Voices - Hardcore UFOs Guided By Voices - Hardcore UFOs (Matador) [mp3] [upcoming shows]

Michael Stipe recently stated that once a band is together for twenty years, the only option is to put out either a live album or a greatest hits collection. Bob Pollard, prolific as he is, has taken that advice and more than doubled it with the Hardcore UFOs box set. Included are albums of: live performances, greatest hits, of unreleased material (some of which even I haven't heard before), the band's first release (Forever Since Breakfast), and singles and B-sides released by Matador. The box set is simply a dream. Take that, Stipe. - dave

Drive-By Truckers - Decoration Day Drive-By Truckers - Decoration Day (New West Records) [audio] [upcoming shows]

Here in the American south, decoration day refers to placing bouquets of flowers on loved ones' gravesites. A more fitting name couldn't be found for this brilliantly crafted collection of songs covering dour and depressing topics with southern boogie, insightful lyrics and country wisdom. Whether it's a song about an incestuous brother and sister ("The Deeper In"), an ode to a father and his advice to an unheeding son ("Outfit") or the reaction to a friend's suicide ("When The Pin Hits The Shell"), "Decoration Day" manages to flesh out its stories while never losing its dignity. - dave

Bishop Allen - Charm School Bishop Allen - Charm School (Champagne School) [audio/video] [upcoming shows]

Bishop Allen brings to mind at different times the Kinks, the Velvets and the Pixies, but with strong songwriting and crisp production (and a whole lot of talent), "Charm School" is simply amazing on its own merits without seeming too derivative. Clever lyrics, jangly guitars and soothing harmonies make the band's debut album a pop masterpiece, solid from the first track to the last. This is pop music that makes the perfect summer soundtrack. - dave
