Why 75orLess?
It's a reasonable question. The idea was born during our daily music chats back in the Fall of 2001, while discussing reviews we'd read. There was only one thing we consistently agreed on: they were too long. It seemed the point of how the music sounded and whether or not it was good was lost in an overlong mess of lyric quotes, personal accounts and a seemingly desperate attempt to fulfill a word count. Eventually someone said, "It's gotten to the point where if you can't say it in 75 words or less, you should shut the eff up". Within a week, 75orless.com was born. The best part about our limit is its reversal of typical music reviews. We limit the amount of words we use, and are not required to reach a number.

Welcoming brit pop, flip hop, hip hop, trip hop, nintendocore, nerdcore, sadcore, grindcore, hardcore, rockabilly, shockabilly, psychobilly, disco, narcocorrido, techno, turbo, electro, tango, zolo, soul, new new wave, new age, nu gaze, nu metal, new grass, new romantic, black metal, tap, neo-psychedelia, prog, kabuki, surf, noise, show tunes, prison metal, synth, ragtime, tuvan throat-singing, death, improv, idm, swamp, tin pan alley, crust, electronic, indie, pagan, folk, merseybeat, punk, lo-fi, pop, western, gothic, samba, travesty, reggae, jazz, blues, acid, avant-garde, easy listening, sludge, viking, polka, garage, country, no wave, wizard, rap, jug, twee, swing, electronic hardcore, comedy, math rock, nordic, space age, medieval, thrash, muzak, beatbox, old metal, world, yer major label industry crap and all other music submissions.

To be considered for a review, send musical submissions to:

ATTN: Reviews

I should mention, we also love vinyl submissions.

Another option available for submissions is to make your release available for easy download. Please make sure that your music is available for download as 160kb mp3 (or better). Zip files with music and info are very welcome. No streaming, wav, flac, real player, windows media or quicktime files will be considered. We will not install any proprietary music players that are required to hear your music. Send your link to: 75orless [at] gmail.com

No matter how you submit your music, here's a few things to keep in mind...

Please include some info with your submission, it doesn't have to be fancy. We just need some sort of starting point like, "This album sounds like heavy metal mixed with Brazilian pop music." Giving us a description of your music greatly increases your chances of getting reviewed. We are sorry to report we cannot review all submissions. We are a very small operation and our staff is completely volunteer. If your music is great, we will let our readers know. It doesn't matter to us if you are on a major label or you recorded it in your basement. On the flip side of that, if you are too sensitive to handle an unfavorable review, please refrain from submitting. We like to give descriptive or generally positive reviews but sometimes can't help ourselves. You should not email us to ask us if it's alright to submit music.

If you have the desire to write about music, let us know. we are always looking for contributors. you can email us at info [at] 75orless.com for the submission guidelines. Here are the basics:

1. our writers do not get paid.
2. if you work for a label, promotional company, band or have other connections, be prepared to not write about them.

Northern State - Dying In Stereo Northern State - Dying In Stereo (Star Time) [audio] [video] [upcoming shows]

Who would have ever known that three white girls from Long Island could out-rap many of their colleagues? Northern State's debut EP shows that you can have a fun hip hop album and still have smart, clever lyrics. Think of a more literate Beastie Boys before they met the Dalai Lama. This album isn't going to change the world but it may very well make you shake your ass right off your body. And that's a good thing. - robert

On the sujbect of female mcs, does anyone remember Boss ("eat this clit up/until you spit up")? And that was like ten years ago!
This Northern State shit is so undergrad and j.v.

Heh heh heh... I'll admit, their voices are a bit annoying, but Northern State's potential far exceeds that of any other women's rap group. It really comes down to marketability: three hot white girls sounding like the Beastie Boys and backed by ?uestlove. Give me another present-day female rap group with such capabilities...

Remember when hip-hop was fun? What could be more fun then well-worded rhymes, bouncy beats and three hot girls?

I didn't realize they were trying to pass themselves off as Chuck D. That must be what everyone thinks as they react with such vitriol.

Personally I kinda miss the Yeastie Girlz.

How about this:
"I'm a vegetarian/ Humanitarian/ Imaginarian [sic]/ I'm a Libertarian/ The country's getting ugly and there's more in store/ But don't blame me 'cause I voted for Gore."
You have to acknowledge that those lyrics at least reflect some pretense of sociopolitical significance. You might think it's intended to be fun on account of it's so facile and stupid, but I'm not so sure. That's all I'm saying.

there's a very simple reason to dislike northern state: their music sucks complete ass. their politics make it even worse. as pitchfork put it, NS are "juvenile, simpering, weak, preachy, pointless and accidentally snooty."

and (as someone more articulate from a DJ nerd website) put it:"Northern State will almost certainly receive a degree of media coverage that's wildly disproportionate to any talent they may possess, purely down to the fact that they are women. Now, this isn't their fault - their gender should be irrelevant - but journalists with Christgau's attitude to hip-hop (which is to say, those who never, ever accept the music on its own terms, but will occasionally give grudging props to acts who are either a) white, b) rock-influenced, c) "real" musicians or d) pushing their idea of an acceptable liberal political agenda) will consider it their professional duty to see to it that the gender imbalance within hip-hop is redressed, and will champion Northern State as a means of doing this, irrespective of the quality of their music. Why they've never felt the urge to achieve such a result by championing Lyte, Bahamadia, Jean Grae, What What, etc., is another matter, of course. Perhaps they're more concerned with how that gender imbalance affects white women's level of access?"aside from all that though, their music alone is still pretty fucking wretched.

just the fact that pitchfork said anything about it means it must suck, right hipsters? i won't even give this record a chance since pitchfork bashed it........oh and it will probably sell more than YOUR record so just one more reason to hate on it....

northern state was created by salon magazine's music staff when they realized that they hadn't run a story about, my God, literate rappers in nearly a year.

i wanted to like them when i saw them open for le tigre. i tried. and yet, i failed. thanks a lot, salon.

Bitchfork is by no means a litmus test or seal of approval; they just happened to be really on the money with that review. And there ARE legitimate female rappers who can drop science and talk politics (Apani B., Invincible, Jean Grae, et al); the problem is that unlike Northern State, they haven't recieved MOUNTAINS of salivating press. Even more frustrating is the fact that - again, unlike Northern State - they actually have skills.

Well, ?uestlove is telling the NS haters to fuck off. So there.

"Thing that is most hilarious--is white people hate northern state for---being white."

intelligent and mass appeal don't usually coincide with each other. so when you add it all up, you have a clever hip hop group that is talented, but hyped-up because of their race and gender. i personally don't like their music.

Clay, I feel for you. I once threw a whole large Wendy's Frosty out the window, on Highway 5 near Bakersfield.

It was dripping down my arm. I had to do it.

I still think about that Frosty.

I was at the Columbus show last night too (Opening for Cake). Intellectual? Literate? Please... half the songs consisted of "rocking the mike" "northern state" "1-2-3." "giggle, this is a song we wrote about getting drunk, yo" I could have picked up three drunken sorority girls and a beat box and sold more records. When they realized the crowd wasn't into it, it became awkward and even more lame.

Luscious Jackson has more talent in their roadie crew than Northern State.

Line of the night: "I'm sure you're band is so much better."

Ironic line of the night: "Have you ever been to a party that was supposed to be really cool, you get there and it sucks?" Hmmm.

"That's garbage sister!" - Homestar Runner

That sentence alone sums up my initial impression of NS. I actually listened to some of their mp3s on their website. First thought: sounds like the Beasties. Second thought: A really bad impersonation of the Beasties. The worst part is that they actually could be good -- that is, if they could actually rap. Oh yeah, and the whole "hardcore-white-girl-life" thing ain't workin'.

THIS BLOWS ASS. Like, not regular ass, but big sweaty, not wiped properly ass. My girlfriend, who knows nothing about rap said, "their voices hurt my ears." ...yeah, mine too. My little sister can come up with rhymes better than this shit. ...and who the hell said they were good looking? They're collectively about 75 pounds from being good looking. Sorry, I digress because their music isn't really worth talking about. Some of the beats are cold, but their lyrics need a LOT of work. Or someone else writing them...something. That "I came thru the door/I said it before" bullshit -- man, we were doing that in grade school. Buy this CD only if you like over-priced shiny round things.
